"I had postpartum depression pretty intensely when Ever was born," Morissette said in a special on Oprah's OWN channel. "I woke up underwater every day and [felt] that tar was being poured all over me, and I just didn't want to be alive."
Paltrow has described the five months after her son Moses as "one of the darkest and most painfully debilitating chapters of my life." She also said she didn't recognize that pain as postpartum depression until later.
Shields had such a brutal battle with the illness that she wrote an entire memoir about it,Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression. "Having it does not mean you are not a good mother or that you are crazy," she told other women. "Above all, it does not mean that you don't love your child."
The onset of her depression came six months after daughter Coco was born, making it even harder for Cox to understand why she was feeling suicidal. "I couldn't sleep. My heart was racing. And I got really depressed," she said. "I went to the doctor and found out my hormones had been pummeled."
In an essay for Gwyneth Paltrow's newsletter Goop, Howard explained that she felt completely numb from the second her son was born. "I seemed to be suffering emotional amnesia. I couldn't genuinely cry, or laugh, or be moved by anything," she recalled. "Postpartum depression is hard to describe—the way the body and mind and spirit fracture and crumble in the wake of what most believe should be a celebratory time."
So severe was theNashvillestar's depression following the birth of daughter Kaya that she has undergone two stints in treatment. "The postpartum depression I have been experiencing has impacted every aspect of my life," she told fans in a tweet. "Rather than stay stuck due to unhealthy coping mechanisms I have chosen to take time to reflect holistically on my health and life."
Rinna opened up on TV to discuss how she felt "hopeless," "lost," and "worthless" after the birth of her first child."I suffered silently, and I don't want any woman to have to do that again," she said.
