7-Year-Old Leukemia Survivor Cries as She Meets Her Bone Marrow Donor
Bone Marrow Donor Meets Her Adorable 4-Year-Old Recipient
A 22-year-old bone marrow donor was brought to tears on Sunday when she met her 4-year-old recipient for the very first time.
Two years ago, Kayla Hammergren, now a sophomore at Boston College, got a life-changing phone call from the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation. When they told her she was a potential match for a 2-year-old boy in Texas, she was completely overwhelmed. "I was ecstatic, scared, shocked and speechless. I had a million emotions running through me that I didn't even know what to do," she told WCVB.
That little boy was James, who was diagnosed with leukemia at 19 months old. A few months later, he received a bone marrow transplant from Kayla that helped to save his life. Now, at four years old, he and his family traveled to Chestnut Hill, MA, to meet her.
The reunion was an emotional one for all, especially Kayla who says she's been dreaming about this day for the past two years. "A part of her is going to be a part of him for the rest of his life and it's an incredible thing," James's dad, Nick Strejc, told the crowd at the Walk For Life this weekend.
James and Kayla jogged through the finish line together hand in hand.
