How to Select a Rising Star Article on wikiHow

Rising Stars are newly written articles that are of exceptionally high quality. While reviewing new articles for quality, New Article Boosters can select an article as a Rising Star. This article will show you how to select/mark an article as a Rising Star.

  • Before you start: You'll need to be a New Article Booster to perform these steps. Read to learn how to become one.

Steps

  1. Choose an article to review.Click on a title.
  2. Decide whether the article is worthy of being a Rising Star.Since RS articles are featured on the main page for a considerable amount of time, it's important that the article is high-quality and helpful. Check over the article, consider where it stands now, and make any edits that could improve it. Take the time to read .
    • They don't have to be at , but they should be well developed enough to provide satisfactory answers and interesting or helpful advice for readers.
    • Depending on the topic, they don'tnecessarilyneed , photos, or . However, articles on controversial topics or in serious areas like medical topics, socio-emotional or mental health-related topics, or legal topics often benefit from authoritative sourcing. Tech topics often benefit from clear step-by-step screenshots or a video. What's needed often comes down to a judgment call, based on the particular topic at hand and what readers are likely to want from that title.
    • Look at the article as a whole and consider whether, as it stands, a reader would find it appealing, satisfactory, and helpful, or not. Are there any obvious gaps or missing aspects? If you think a reader would they be left wondering, "Why did this article have no sourcing? Was it just one person's opinion?" or "Why didn't they address this common situation?" or "Why didn't it have better screenshots or drawings?" it might be worth asking the author if they can further develop that area of the article; you can always place a temporary {{inuse}} template on the article and ask them if they're interested in working more on that part of the article before you finish the boost.
    • Rising Stars do need to be thorough, informative, and well-written so that they help readers. They should be on their way to representing the best wikiHow has to offer. They shouldn't fail to address any big questions that a novice reader is likely to have on that topic.
  3. Mark the article as an RS if it meets the standards after your edits.Click the yellow star next toPromotefrom the floating menu on the right. The following will occur automatically:
    • The article will be marked as a Rising Star in the software and a green star will be placed next to the article name on their user page (unless they've chosen to hide the article list).
    • A message will be sent to the original author telling them that their article has been selected as a Rising Star and congratulating them.
      • You can still write a personal message to the original author, complimenting them on their article. This adds a personal touch.
    • The article will be added to the Rising Star feed and will most likely appear on the main page, usually towards the bottom.
    • A template that explains the article is a RS will be placed on the articles' discussion page alongside the article's author and the booster that chose it as a Rising Star.
