People have been under so much stress in the past few years that they've "adapted to it," physician Paul Rosch told USA Today.

Although stress levels appear to be balancing out, they remain high and surpass what Americans consider to be healthy.

With high stress levels, unhealthy stress management and the health consequences of stress, the study suggests that the nation is on the verge of a stress-induced public health crisis.

39 percent of participants said that over the past year their stress levels had increased, and 44 percent noted an increase within the past five years.

Money is the most significant source of stress at 75%. Other sources are work (70%), the economy (67%), relationships (58%), and family responsibilities (57%).

The APA reports that spending time with friends and family as a stress management strategy has actually declined within the past year, while exercise and listening to music are the top two ways to manage stress.
