Tiffany & Co. Sends Donald Trump a Strong Message About Climate Change

Tiffany & Co. has a strong message for President Trump. The iconic jeweler posted an open letter on its social media accounts on Tuesday morning, warning POTUS about the dangers of climate change and asking him to keep America involved in the Paris Climate Agreement.

"Dear President Trump," the note reads, "We're still in for bold climate change action. Please keep the U.S. in the Paris Climate Agreement. The disaster of climate change is too real, and the threat to our planet and to our children is too great."

The caption offers a brief explanation: Tiffany strongly supports keeping the U.S. in the #ParisAgreement. #ClimateChange #ActOnClimate #TiffanyCSR."

Newspaper readers also spotted the message in a Tiffany & Co. ad in theNew York Times.

Though surprising, the jewelry brand's plea isn't entirely out of place. Tiffany & Co. calls itself a sustainable brand and boasts using recycled paper to make its iconic blue boxes and pledging to cut down to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Tiffany & Co.'s message to the Donald Trump arrives as the president considers whether or not to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement—the first international, legally binding agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and avoid the dangers of climate change worldwide. The the U.S. signed the agreement in April 2019, joining a list of nearly 200 signatories that includes Canada, China the European Union.

Today, White House advisors postponed a "key meeting" to discuss America's involvement in the Paris Agreement,Politicoreports. This is the second time they've delayed the discussion.

The administration is reportedly split on the decision, according toThe Independent. Ivanka Trump, Secretary of State (and former ExxonMobil CEO) Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary James Mattis are in favor of the U.S. remaining a signatory. Trump's senior advisor, Steve Bannon, and the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt, oppose.

President Trump is expected to make a final announcement by the end of the month.

Tiffany is one of several brands urging Trump to remain in the Paris Agreement. Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Unilever, Gap and 17 more companies (including Tiffany’s) signed a letter in partnership with Ceres, a sustainability nonprofit, supporting the agreement.

“Dear President Trump, as some of the largest companies based or operating in the Untied States, we strongly urge you to keep the United States in the Paris Agreement on climate change,” the letter begins.

The message was printed on a full-page newspaper ad in theNew York Timeson Monday, and will also appear in theWall Street Journaland theNew York Post.
