What is hemoglobin?
Everybody had to donate blood for a general analysis. Receiving the results of research, the doctor sometimes informs the patient about the insufficient amount of hemoglobin or its excess in the blood. And usually never explains to the patient what hemoglobin is and why it is generally necessary to determine it.
Hemoglobin is a red pigment contained in human erythrocytes. It is he who gives the red color of blood, due to the presence in the hemoglobin molecule of a small, iron-containing, non-protein portion - heme. The protein component of its molecule is called globin.
For the normal functioning of the internal organs and tissues requires oxygen delivered by the blood. It is necessary to keep the oxygen in the blood, which makes hemoglobin. One gram of hemoglobin captures oxygen in a volume of 1.34 ml. With a lack of hemoglobin in the body (anemia), oxygen deficiency occurs in organs with the most intense metabolism: the heart, brain, kidneys and liver.
The amount of hemoglobin in a liter of blood in healthy people is 120-160 g.The rate of its content in the blood of men - 130-160 g / l, and the rate of 120-140 g / l is considered the norm for women. Reduction of hemoglobin in the blood to 60 g / l is already dangerous for the life of the patient.
Where does he come from
At rest, the heart in 1 minute pumps about 4 liters of blood, carrying about 200 ml of oxygen to the tissues of the body. Active muscular work requires a tenfold increase in the amount of oxygen supplied, for which hemoglobin is constantly produced by red blood cells.
