What is selenium for our body?

The chemical element, which is a part of many hormones and enzymes of the human body - selenium - is found in nature infrequently. However, its importance for the human body is difficult to overestimate: it helps to regulate the work of almost all systems of the human body.

Usually, under environmental conditions, the component can be found together with sulfur or its compounds: it is a solid substance with a characteristic luster - a metalloid. Often, accumulation occurs near volcanoes: its increased content is observed in the soil and vegetation, as well as in living organisms - insects and animals.

However, its total share in the crust is still very insignificant. Why the body needs this element and what its benefits will be discussed in this article.

The role of an element in metabolic processes and its properties

Selenium is an important component for antioxidant protection of the human body from free radicals. Many know what action they have.However, they do not betray the proper importance of their truly damaging effects: the systematic effects of free radicals cause serious damage, starting with premature aging of the skin and ending with various oncological ailments. So, in no case should not underestimate the importance of the protective antioxidant system.

Neither vitamins, nor coenzymes, nor flavonoids are able to replace selenium. It constitutes a significant part of the enzyme called glutathione peroxidase, which brings tangible benefits: it helps to overcome the most aggressive free radicals - those that are not compatible with other antioxidants. If the body is not enough, it is not enough, then the most important protective link of the body almost does not work.

Previously, selenium was considered a dangerous poisonous substance: in large quantities it does poison, however, the shortage is also fatal for humans. It helps to increase the resistance of organs to negative external influences, helps to resist viruses and bacteria, prevents inflammation and helps prevent cardiovascular diseases and diseases of the endocrine system.

This element is able to interact with vitamins C and E, enhancing their effects on the body, which prevents oxidation of tissues and cells. As a result, the aging of the body slows down significantly. In addition, selenium protects nucleic acids from damage, and, according to some scientists, is most needed not for women, but for men, since it directly affects the state of their sexual sphere.

It is believed that the lack of this element in some cases is the cause of the sudden death of male infants. This is explained by the fact that a child fed cow's milk instead of maternal milk does not receive vitamin E and selenium, as a result of which the body of boys cannot cope with the lack of an important component.

In addition, it is worth noting the importance of the element in the endocrine system: since it participates in the production of triiodothyronine, or rather, the enzyme that controls the formation of this component, it helps to normalize the function of the pancreas and thyroid gland, reduces fatigue and contributes to the good absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

Possessing anti-inflammatory properties, it prevents arthritis and bronchial asthma, prevents colitis and psoriasis, and reduces the severity of existing diseases. In addition, he warns of multiple sclerosis, and, no less important, provides protection against heavy metals.

There are also supporting facts to this: people who have been working in hazardous production for several years are less prone to occupational diseases if they live in an area enriched with selenium. By the way, it reduces the toxicity of some drugs that are used in chemotherapy.

Selenium-containing diet: lack and excess of substance

To get the organs of selenium, you need to look for it in products. This is the only way to optimally saturate organs with this component, since the inorganic variety is practically not absorbed by humans. It is contained in such food:

  • in seafood and fish;
  • legumes;
  • olive oil;
  • nuts;
  • in buckwheat and porridge;
  • garlic;
  • salted lard;
  • egg yolk;
  • tomatoes;
  • grain or black bread;
  • in white mushrooms.

With regard to daily needs, then the day people need about 30-100 micrograms of this element. On admission of less than 5 micrograms per day, a shortage gradually develops.If 5 mg of substance is eaten, then intoxication comes.

Element accumulated in tissues and organs can be saved if the consumption of sweets is noticeably reduced - all kinds of cakes and pastries, sugar and drinks with gas. These products significantly reduce the digestibility of the substance. Help in the assimilation of the component will help vitamin E.

With a shortage of occupational diseases develop quite quickly, clarity of thinking decreases, working capacity decreases and immunity deteriorates. A person often begins to suffer from acute respiratory infections and acute respiratory viral infections, as well as purulent skin diseases, injuries and wounds almost do not heal or heal poorly, visual acuity decreases, impotence occurs.

Drug deficiency can be caused by drug therapy with phenacetin, sulfates, as well as paracetamol or antimalarial drugs. As for the consequences of chronic lack of substance, it is worth noting:

  • a significant increase in infertility, both male and female, and, consequently, a decline in the birth rate;
  • growth of pathologies during childbirth or pregnancy, the emergence of congenital pathologies of babies;
  • an increase in the number of physical and mental disorders in adolescents and children;
  • severe course of chronic illnesses and an increase in mortality from them, a decrease in life expectancy in general and a deterioration in its quality;
  • the emergence of new forms of viral diseases and the aggressive course of existing species.

An overdose of the substance arises from the intake of inorganic forms contained in the preparations. It is known that even small doses of inorganic selenium contribute to rapid intoxication, and when taking 700 or more micrograms per day, symptoms of poisoning may appear.

If high doses of the component are taken continuously, then as a result, falling hair and exfoliating nails can be obtained, the teeth will begin to deteriorate, and as a result of the accumulation of carcinogenic substances, nervous disorders and inflammatory diseases will appear.

Before taking the component, it is necessary to visit a doctor who, by examination, will establish the fact of deficiency, the degree of deficiency and help determine the desired daily dose.
